Why Men in Jacksonville Need a Different Approach to Mental Health

When I worked at the Jacksonville University Counseling Center, I often met with men who were experiencing panic attacks. They would come in, sit across from me in a chair, and find themselves stuck, unable to put their pain into words. The silence in those four walls was heavy.

One day, I invited a client to walk with me down to the river. Something shifted. As his feet hit the ground and his body fell into rhythm, words began to flow. He spoke freely, processing the fears, the pressure, and the anxiety that had kept him silent in the office. By the time we got back, he had not only voiced his struggles, but he had also begun to find clarity, direction, and even solutions.

That is when it hit me: movement is medicine.

Why Movement Matters for Men’s Mental Health

For many men, sitting face-to-face in an office feels unnatural. The silence and stillness can make it harder to open up. But when we move, whether walking a trail, paddling a board, or rucking with weight on our shoulders, something unlocks.

  • Walking promotes bilateral stimulation of the brain, the same principle used in therapies like EMDR and Accelerated Resolution Therapy, which helps people process emotions.

  • Sweating and movement release stress chemicals and lower the risk of heart disease.

  • Being in nature activates awe, grounding, and connection, shifting the body into states of peace and clarity.

At Jacksonville University, we used evidence-based practices like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), and Gestalt techniques in motion. Students were able to process anxiety, depression, panic, and burnout more effectively when we combined proven tools with the natural power of movement and the environment around us.

That experience shaped the foundation for Healing Hobbies. While we are not a therapy clinic, we carry forward the same principle: movement, nature, and intentional conversation can unlock clarity and create space for people to truly come back to themselves.

A New Model for Mental Wellness in Jacksonville

This is why our office is not four walls, it is the outdoors. Clients are able to process anxiety, stress, and burnout more effectively when we bring proven tools into nature and movement.

For men especially, this approach has been transformative. Instead of feeling pressured to perform in a traditional counseling setting, they are able to walk, talk, and process in a way that feels real and accessible.

From Panic to Purpose

I watched men who once struggled with panic attacks find autonomy, resilience, and confidence. They learned to navigate the waves of emotion instead of drowning in them. Many went on to graduate, begin careers, and live with a renewed sense of strength.

This is the mission of Healing Hobbies: to walk alongside men and women in Jacksonville, helping them reconnect with their bodies, minds, and faith through nature, movement, and proactive mental wellness practices.
